With what PopMatters describes as “tenacious swagger,” critically-acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII.
Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters’ inaugural LP hit the streets in 2018 featuring a sound that hearkens back to early Stones, ‘70s psychedelic country rock, and alternately charms like a Sunday afternoon front porch session…

Matt Mitchell began writing and performing his music when he was a small child. He was trained classically on piano starting at the age of four and added guitar as a teenager. Matt has taken his foundational skills in music and steadily developed his own sound; a flavor of folk influenced, narrative rich, Americana-roots music. His songs are honest, relatable and moving. You’ll find him playing piano, hammond organ or strumming his very unique 1930’s-era guitar that once belonged to his Great Grandfather. In 2005, after a year living abroad volunteering and traveling Europe, he joined the San Francisco based band Ten Mile Tide and spent the better part of the next six years touring the country as a keyboardist, harmonica player and singer. Matt has played music in every state but Florida. In 2011 he formed his own band; a six piece Americana/rock n’ roll group called ‘Folkinception’. The band was bestowed the honor of “Best Original Band” in 2018 and 2019 in the Pacific NW Inlander’s ‘Best Of’ reader poll. In 2019 they changed their name to ‘Trego’. The band has recorded two, full length albums and is set to release a third in the fall of 2021. In January of 2020 Matt moved into an imported Japanese bus and spent the following 18 months on the road with his wife and two dogs. His newest collection of songs were written amidst his experiences traveling during the tumult and uncertainty of the past few years.

Smith and Tegio is the musical project of long time friends and songwriting partners, Austin Smith and Mark Tegio. Austin and Mark met through a mutual friend in their late teens in San Diego, CA. Their friend owned a skate shop where they would skateboard out back during the day and play music and share songs at night. These years were filled with musical exploration for the two. By introducing each other to singer-songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley and Tom Waits, among many others, they laid the groundwork for what was to come. And although these years were formative, it wasn’t until years later that the two truly started to mesh musically and find their own voices as guitar players and lyricists.

Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music.
He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi.
Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Bill Monroe, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings.
Josh has played in dozens of bands, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

The Pagan Jug Band is an all-acoustic, boot-stompin’ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin’ guitar – throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard and you’ve got a band that really knows how to get folks out of their seats and onto the dance floor! On any given Tuesday in Portland you’ll see them playing their weekly “Pagan Tuesday” show – where the band sometimes swells up to 10 members as long-time fans and random passers-by join them on stage to keep the music communal. The Pagans have a large body of original songs that they mix seamlessly with carefully curated covers and traditionals.

JT is influenced by all the great guitarists and has a stylized sound whether on the acoustic or electric guitars. He is joined by bassist wife Maggie. Ken Woodside often joins them on drums. Follow their journey filled with characters, funny tales, and stories of a life well traveled. Topped with plenty of musical twists and turns, jams and vocal harmonies.
“I listen to this band and can’t figure out what makes JT’s guitar leads so different and so great. He sounds like no one else on the planet. I’m on the edge of my seat listening”! – Mary Flower.

Our favorite unreconstituted folk-rock forefather returns to the Laurelthirst!
Singer and songwriter Michael Hurley has became a cult hero for his playfully surreal brand of folk music that’s witty, thoughtful, and filled with both joy and consternation. Married to simple and engaging melodies steeped in traditional folk styles, Hurley often prefers recording at home to going into a studio. Much of his work has a charmingly lo-fi feel, one of the qualities that made him an influential hero and kindred spirit to the later freak folk scene. We’re honored to have him returning to our stage tonight!
These shows have become a little chaotic, we’re going to try charging a cover and see how that affects the overall feel of the show.

The songs on Barna Howard’s second album, Quite a Feelin’, ruminate on his relationship with home. Now entrenched in Portland, Oregon, many of the album’s tracks immortalize and reflect on the Eureka he once knew, while others focus on the relationships that define his new home out west. Small town life has long been celebrated in country and folk music, but Barna’s knack for capturing his own deeply personal nostalgia resonates in a rarely universal way.

Oldest independent music venue in Portland
The LaurelThirst Public House has been part of the Kerns Neighborhood in Portland Oregon since 1988. Since its opening, The LaurelThirst has strived to provide a great place for people to gather and eat good and reasonably priced food, choose from a large selection of micro-brews and wines (many of them local) and a place to hear the best local music that Portland has to offer in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The LaurelThirst has been lucky enough to foster a community of exceptional and diverse people that includes its staff, musicians, neighbors and customers. It is a community that we are constantly thankful for.
